What’s more American than ‘American Idol?’ How about the president, the leader of the free world? ‘Idol’ producer Nigel Lythgoe is actually asking our commander-in-chief if he wants to come on the show during the live episodes to perform Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together.’ Obama performed an impromptu version of the song at a fundraiser at the Apollo Theater, causing Green’s music to spike in sales. Perhaps Lythgoe thinks that a cameo by the President will boost the show’s relatively sagging ratings?

Lythgoe tweeted a note to Obama, writing: “We loved your vocal performance so much we’d love to invite you on to American Idol this Season for a duet with Al Green.”

Really? Like Obama doesn’t have anything better to do than go on ‘Idol?’

While former President Bill Clinton certainly curried favor with younger voters on his campaign trail by going on late night TV and playing the sax, Obama is already President. He doesn’t need validation by appearing on ‘Idol.’ We’re fairly certain he will be sending his regrets regarding this particular invitation.

Furthermore, Lythgoe’s request is in bad taste — the audacity of him to make that type of request.

What do you think, PopCrush readers? Should Obama go on ‘Idol’ in an effort to connect with its viewership? Is it cool or just plain corny?
