Police in Toms River and Manchester said they're getting flooded with calls from residents hearing muffled explosions and feeling rumblings off in the distance. The sounds are a part of mortar firing training at the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JBMDL) this weekend.

Base officials said the I and G Batteries of the 3rd Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment is training at the base through Sunday March 16th. However the firing is scheduled to cease at 11 p.m. each night.

In a written statement JBMDL:

"This training is essential and helps to ensure the readiness of America's fighting force. As a result of this important training, some residents may hear more noise than usual coming from our ranges and may experience possible ground shaking. It is important to note that noise from the ranges may travel farther during overcast weather conditions."
