I’m back today after a few glorious days in Fort Myers, Florida which fell under the heading of “badly needed break to prevent total burnout.”

It’s been a few years since I got away during the non-summer months and while I’m not really sure how long I had not been on an airplane, the last time I flew they actually gave you a soda and snacks for free.  What happened here?  $3.00 for a soda and you have to pay with a credit or debit card.

Plus, could they jam you in any tighter? For the entire flight down from Atlantic City I could feel the knees of the guy behind me jammed into my back.  Enough complaining because this was a short but very sweet trip and my first time spent in what they now call Southwest Florida.

Our traveling companions were long-time friends Joe and Darlene Gomulka and this was our first vacation together and it won’t be our last.  The trip came with a couple of perks: a free place to stay and car to use thanks to a generous friend who has a place in Fort Meyers, just minutes from the beach.  Four of the five days were perfect: clear, sunny skies with temperatures in the mid to upper 70’s and ideal beach conditions.

We spent two of them in Fort Meyers Beach and two on nearby Sanibel Island, including a trip to Captiva which is quite gorgeous.  The one not sunny day saw us head south to Naples which is as beautiful as advertised and loaded with shops, restaurants and luxury cars.

While I could have used a couple more days we really had a terrific time and got along great with the Gomulka’s.  Let’s be honest. A fair share of friendships probably have been ruined on vacations but not this one. Darlene and my wife Jane have a lot in common and Joe and I were just happy to find a good happy hour and there were plenty of choose from.same when it came to grouper sandwiches which I sampled on a somewhat daily basis.

We even got to enjoy a good cigar which we purchased in Napes and saved until the end of our last night.  All in all it was a perfect if brief getaway and one we’ll try and repeat in the future   The next time I fly I’ll also be better prepared and bring my own snacks.
