There was a flurry of voting action taking place at the Statehouse in Trenton on Thursday and one of the bills that were voted on is something many drivers may find comfort in here in the Garden State.

If you enjoy a border around your license plate that features the logo of your favorite sports team, where you went to school, or something fun, you'll soon be able to have that feature on your vehicle -- no problem.

There is legislation (A3494) sponsored by Ocean County State Assemblyman Ron Dancer (R) that passed the General Assembly on Thursday which would allow -- is signed into law -- license plate frames to cover up parts -- not all -- of permanent or temporary license plates in New Jersey.

If you were to get a special frame, under this legislation, you could as long as it doesn't cover up the most important part of the license plate -- the six digits in the middle -- and other important parts.

“This bill will help prevent thousands of drivers from being pulled over for minor license plate frame violations,” Assemblyman Dancer said in a written statement. “New Jersey drivers should not have to spend time and money seeking recourse through the court system. As long as pertinent letters and numbers are recognizable on a plate, a person should be free from unwarranted interactions with police who have much better uses for their time.”

The other piece of this legislation to understand is that the words "New Jersey" and the registration number have to be visible on permanent and temporary tags/plates.

Assemblyman Dancer points to numbers that state between 2017 and 2021, there were 501,699 summonses issued in New Jersey for license plate violations.
