Why I’m a Fan of First Night on New Year’s Eve
Between now and my final show you're going to hear me promote an event I love: First Night Ocean County. It's a low-cost way to have fun in the community. The Seaside Heights Boardwalk is where lots of activities are planned. You'll see jugglers, face painters, balloonists, and magicians. And there will be fireworks at 5pm as long as the weather cooperates.
You can buy your $5 wristbands at the event or in advance. Details, including the performance schedule, are posted on the Seaside Heights website.
I've been a huge fan of First Night ever since going to my first one in Albany, NY in the 1990s. It was a whole night of entertaining performances for a ridiculously low price, everyone was friendly and festive and nobody was drunk and obnoxious. I'd much rather attend a First Night celebration than deal with rowdy crowds where the focus is on the booze.
First Night originally began in Boston as an alcohol-free celebration of the arts. I was proud to be on the organizing committee of First Night Ocean County in its early days. It's expansion to Seaside Heights seemed like a natural next step. I'm so happy to know that the Boardwalk still hosts families every December 31st. If you go, I hope you have a wonderful time! Happy (almost) New Year!
