The 2010 crash of a small plane at Monmouth Executive Airport in Wall Township that killed five aboard came about because of a maneuver by the pilot, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

In a report released today, investigators determined that the pilot's efforts exceeded the craft's operational limitations, causing the right wing to split away.They also noted alterations that might have weakened the wing assembly.

Witnesses at the time described a low, high-speed pass over the airfield with no landing gear lowered, and a piece of the plane breaking off.

It isn't known which of two certified pilots was at the controls. The crash also killed three tourists from Poland.
