5 Common Scams Targeting New Jersey Residents and How to Avoid Them
*Scams on the Rise in New Jersey: What You Need to Know
Unfortunately, scams are becoming more and more common across New Jersey, and criminals are constantly inventing new tricks to take advantage of unsuspecting people. From fake phone calls to fraudulent emails, the threats are everywhere. Staying alert and informed is your best defense.

Like many residents, I’ve been overwhelmed with endless spam calls lately, even though I’m already on the do-not-call list. It seems like the scammers never stop. That’s why it’s so important to know the most common schemes making the rounds right now.
Here are five scams you need to watch out for in New Jersey.
1. Phishing Scams
Phishing happens when fraudsters try to trick you into handing over sensitive information such as bank details, credit card numbers, or even your Social Security number. They often disguise themselves as a trusted company or government agency. If you don’t recognize who’s asking, never give out personal details, verify first.
2. Brushing Scams
If a package arrives at your door that you never ordered, it could be a brushing scam. Shady sellers send out fake “orders” to boost their product ratings with phony reviews. While it may seem harmless, receiving unsolicited items is a red flag that your name and address may have been misused.
3. Gift Card Scams
If someone demands payment with gift cards, stop right there. Real companies and utility providers will never ask for gift cards as a form of payment. This is a favorite tactic of scammers because gift cards are nearly impossible to trace once the codes are given out.
4. Grandparent Scams
This one is particularly heartbreaking. Scammers prey on seniors by pretending to be a grandchild or family member in urgent trouble, begging for money. My own mother used to get these types of calls constantly, and it caused a lot of stress. Protect your loved ones by talking with them in advance about these schemes and creating a family “safe word” or backup plan.
5. Email Scams
We’ve all seen suspicious emails pop into our inbox. Be wary of anything that looks unusual—especially attachments or links from senders you don’t know. Clicking just once can put your personal information and devices at risk.
Stay Alert, Stay Safe
Scammers are relentless, but awareness can go a long way in protecting yourself and your family. If something feels “off,” trust your gut, slow down, and double-check before responding.
