Toms River residents have a new place to workout and get into shape as the township has officially opened a new fitness facility at Veterans Park, off North Bay Avenue.

Mayor Maurice Hill, members of the Township Council, Toms River Police Department, Recreation and Engineering Departments cut the ribbon on Tuesday afternoon to open the Fitness Court.

Toms River spokeswoman Stacy Proebstle said the township partnered with the National Fitness Campaign to install and activate this state-of-the-art outdoor gym facility.

The court's seven stations feature pull-up bars, gymnastics rings, jump boxes and more equipment useful for simple bodyweight exercises.

“The addition of the Fitness Court to Veterans Park demonstrates our commitment to health and fitness in our community,” Mayor Hill said in a statement. “It is a complete workout system that allows residents and visitors to do a complete full body workout in just seven minutes.”

Toms River is the third town in New Jersey to open an outdoor Fitness Court.

Councilwoman Laurie Huryk explains that the fitness court can easily accommodate people following social distancing guidelines.

“During the pandemic, when residents have limited or no access to their regular gyms, it is particularly important that we continue to support health and wellness by providing outdoor exercise equipment,” Councilwoman Huryk said.

Mayor Hill, Councilwoman Huryk and Councilman Matt Lotano also completed two rounds of the 7-minute workout using various stations.

Members of the Toms River Police Department completed ambassador training on the equipment and led a workout for the group as well.

“I just think that it’s a really great opportunity for adults to get in shape,” Councilman Lotano said. “Wherever you are in your fitness journey, there’s something to do on the fitness court.”

As part of the program, there is a free Fitness Court App which will allow you to track your training progress, learn new routines and compete in exciting fitness challenges.
