Governor Chris Christie signs Tara's Law, a measure aimed at protecting individuals with developmental dissabilities living in community care residences. The new law (S-599), sponsored by shore State Senator Jennifer Beck, was drafted in response to the 2008 death of 29-year-old Tara O'Leary, who suffered neglect at the hands of her caregiver as her family attempted to regain custody.

The law tightens current regulations, requiring case managers to visit care facilities monthly. It requires that clients to get annual physical examinations and allows investigators access to all communications when suspicions of abuse or neglect arise. Concerning caregivers, It requires them to undergo continued education and biannual medical examinations.
