Saturday Central Regional High School and the Clemente Family hosted their 7th Annual Jimmy V Classic to raise funds in the battle against cancer.  There were seven basketball games played with proceeds from admission, refreshments, donations and sponsors all going to the cause which is near and dear to Golden Eagles coach Mike Clemente. It was just 7 years ago he was diagnosed with stage 2 lymphoma and it required six months of grueling chemotherapy, this coming only 10 months after he and his wife Allison welcomed their first child, Emily.  After Central’s game during the showcase there was a ceremony honoring Mike with a video recounting his journey as well as the tremendous support he has received along the way.

Allison also made two announcements that drew a standing ovation.  With this year’s event they have topped the $100,000 mark in the fight against cancer and Mike is officially cancer-free.  That’s especially good news for his family which now includes a younger daughter Audrey.  Congratulations to everyone involved who has supported this event over the years, especially Mike’s mom Maureen and Central athletic director John Scran.  Plus there was some excellent basketball for the fans in attendance.

On Sunday I attended the premier screening of South Football’s Impossible Dream an hour-plus documentary on how Ron Signorino Sr. took a then small-town doormat football program in Toms River and made it into a shore and state power in just a few years.  A sell-out crowd at the Grunin Center at Ocean County College included many former players who participated in the 1969 Toms River South-Middletown game which is considered by most as the greatest game in Shore Conference history.  As a 13-year old who witnessed the game it would be hard to argue against that.  I was honored to introduce filmmaker Sandra Levine whose documentary includes interviews with former players and of course the Signorino family who turned out in droves to support their 88-year old patriarch who looked great and certainly enjoyed the day.
