When a Shake Shack opened on Route 70 earlier this spring, South Jersey rejoiced. And with another location planned for Freehold, the Shore area's collective mouths were watering.

But, it pains me to pass this news along, it won't be happening.

Following on the footsteps of Shake Shack's opening in Marlton, all eyes turned to the next planned location right on Route 9 in Freehold.

But, as the Asbury Park Press reported yesterday, the Freehold Planning Board put the kibosh on the burger bar and sent the plans to the trash heap.

The request by Getty Realty Corp. for more than a dozen exceptions to zoning rules in order to build a Shake Shack was just too much for a majority of the board. The board voted 4-3 to prepare a resolution to deny the project.

The story notes that concerns ranged from parking questions to traffic troubles and more.

So, sorry Monmouth and Ocean Counties, still no Shake Shack for our area. The closest is straight out Route 70 in Marlton for now. We'll keep you updated if new plans emerge!
