Each year, a member of Congress is allowed to select a small number of constituents for nomination to the United States Service Academies. A shore area representative has created a panel to help with the process.

Third District Congressman Jon Runyan recently announced the creation and participation of the board. They will be tasked with evaluating and recommending nominees to the Academies to Runyan directly. Senators, Congressmen, the President and Vice President are authorized to offer their choices. Runyan believes the group will select "great nominees that will represent the district with honor."

The board members Runyan has selected come from all walks of life from retired military officers, combat veterans, to local elected officials and parents of students currently enrolled in a service academy. There are two members from Ocean County.

Toms River Council President Maurice Hill has had an extensive background in the service. In addition to serving his local community, he's a retired United States Navy Rear Admiral and has been awarded a number of military honors. He is currently working at his dental practice in Brick Township and says they're looking for "young people who have a desire to serve and who love their country."

Hill adds "we aren't necessarily looking for a straight A student. We want to see passion, desire - the full package."

Also on the panel is retiring Lacey School Superintendent Richard Starodub, who also has a military background.

The panel of seven members is expected to meet sometime in December before the holidays. Click here to read more.
