Route 70 crash hospitalizes Toms River man

A Toms River driver is hospitalized with serious injuries following a late-night crash of his car with a tractor-trailer on Route 70 in the township.

Police say that Ariel Vega, 36, was headed east in a 2005 Honda at about 1 AM, and turned left at Whitesville Road, into the path of the 2007 Freightliner driven by Stephen Thomas, 37, of Glassboro.

Vega was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. The intersection remained closed most of the night.

Police did not indicate whether Thomas sustained any injuries, and have not indicated whether any charges, or traffic violation citations, would result.
