Alan McGinnis, the Pemberton man who killed the third member of a love triangle was sentenced to 30-years in state prison today by the Honorable Guy P. Ryan, J.S.C., for the murder of Cody MacPherson on September 24, 2017, announced Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer.
McGinnis, 27, pled guilty to one count of First Degree Murder in the death of MacPherson before Judge Ryan on December 10, 2018.
The Court ordered today that McGinnis will be required to serve all 30 years of his sentence.
During his admission of guilt before the Court on December 10, McGinnis admitted to stabbing MacPherson in the neck and chest at a residence in Pemberton Township on September 24, 2017.
He then admitted to placing the body into the trunk of a vehicle and dumping it in a wooded area in Jackson Township.
MacPherson’s remains were found by a District Warden with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service during a controlled burn on March 19, 2018.
On April 28, 2018, McGinnis was charged with the murder of MacPherson after a comprehensive multiagency investigation conducted by numerous law enforcement officers, including Detective Jay Luis of the Pemberton Township Police Department, Detective Brian Miller of the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, Detective Shaun Clark of the New Jersey State Police Major Crimes Unit, Detective Scott Conover of the Jackson Township Police Department, and Detective Brant Uricks of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
McGinnis admitted to killing his romantic rival, who was last reportedly seen before his remains were found months later, at the home of a woman in Browns Mills MacPherson was involved with.
That's where investigators discovered an affair with the woman being the mother of McGinnis' two children.
McGinnis was ok with it until he found out she was cheating on him with MacPherson who was stabbed in the chest and neck.
Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer thanked all involved in the investigation and trials, including Chief Trial Attorney for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office - Michael Weatherstone - as well as Assistant Prosecutor Alyssa Mandara for their diligent efforts in prosecuting Alan McGinness for the murder of Cody McPherson.
