I never thought that I would be one of those, "hey, you darn kids! Get off of my lawn!" types of adults. But the further away I get from my own childhood, the less I understand about kids today.

As I was driving down Route 9 just a little while ago to grab some lunch, I saw a pair of teenagers walking on the side of the road. One of them was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and...shorts.

It's 16 degrees out.

Now, I've gone from the gym, to my car, and back to my house in the winter wearing shorts before, but it was just to get from one building to another to shower and change. I have to assume that this kid, carrying a backpack, wore that particular ensemble to school and knew he'd be walking home.

Is this a fashion statement? Not having clean laundry? A display of machismo?

These are genuine questions. If you know, please enlighten me. I honestly don't get it.

And this isn't the first time I've seen this either. This past weekend I was at the Ocean County Mall (on Saturday, when it was snowing) and saw a number of teens walking around in shorts as if it was the middle of July.

If you have kids, ask them for me, I genuinely want to know.
