As you get ready to read today’s segment please be clear on a couple of things:

  1. I know anytime you talk about something involving national politics you risk being vilified by those who don’t agree with you. I understand that.
  2.  This has nothing to do what who I voted for. I say that because I filled out my mail-in ballot yesterday and dropped it in one of the 17 secure ballot drop boxes in Ocean County.  Who I voted for is my business and it’s staying that way.
  3. This is nothing more than an observation, plain and simple.

The first of three presidential debates is scheduled for tonight in Cleveland, Ohio from 9 p.m. -10:30 p.m. and will be moderated by Chris Wallace, the anchor of “Fox News Sunday.”  There will be no opening statement and the debate will be divided into six 15-minute segments which were chosen by Wallace: the records of President Trump and former Vice President Biden, the Supreme Court, Covid-19, the economy, race and violence in American cities and the integrity of the election.

There will be an audience of less than 100 so it will not be a raucous event like some of these in the past.

Now that I have laid the groundwork let me offer this opinion.  For months I have been saying Biden would win this election and I’ve been bet a couple of dollars with some friends.  This opinion is based solely on my belief that Trump has to win too many states that are now toss-ups or leaning towards Biden.

Yes that’s what he did in 2016 when he shocked the world (and Hillary Clinton) but right now I don’t see that happening again.  Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Ohio all went for Trump four years ago but in most polls he’s leading in only one or maybe two of them.

I think the president’s re-election chances hinge on how he performs in the debates which is why tonight’s first is must-see TV for me.  Trump needs to swing votes his way and scoring a split-decision won’t do it. The question is can he deliver a knockout.

Get out the popcorn and sit back…I can’t wait!
