The incident took place near Thorne Middle School, in Port Monmouth, at about 2:45 PM.

According to police, the youngster was struck while darting across Murphy Road.
The student incurred face and body cuts and scratches that police deemed non-life-threatening.

Middletown Emergency Medical Services and MONOC personnel treated the student on site, then drove the victim to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, police said.

Middletown Traffic Safety Unit Corporal Nick Caprio is handling investigations.

Police said that the vehicle was not property of the Board of Education or a bus company, but belongs to a private citizen.

They did not specify the type of vehicle or identify the driver, nor did they elaborate on other factors such as crowds, visibility, or the presence of crossing guards, faculty members, parents or staffers. No citations, so far, have been issued.
