It has been just over six months since Ocean County had it's first reported case of Covid-19 Coronavirus, a 72-year old man from Manchester Township on March 9.

Nearly a week later, the Manchester Township School District, among others, announced that they were shutting down due to Covid-19 concerns at a time when information was still in the Genesis stages and much was unknown.

Throughout the spring and summer, schools wrapped up virtually and were planning for how to begin the 2020-21 school year while waiting for guidance from the state and then learning they would have to have their plans approved before doing anything.

There have been sporadic cases of the virus reported since schools began to open across the Jersey Shore and the state this month.

This week, Manchester Township Schools Superintendent David Trethaway announced in a letter to parents that an individual has tested positive for Covid-19.

Trethaway said the district is working with the Ocean County Health Department as well as federal, state and local health agencies to "assure the health and safety of our community."

The name of the individual, which has not been listed as a student or staff member, is not being released Trethaway said due to privacy requirements.

Any child who may have been in close contact with this individual will be notified by health officials.

Cleaning continues as planned at Manchester Township High School.

"Our health and safety protocols include the cleaning and disinfecting of all exposed areas, and those protocols have been followed," Trethaway said in his letter. "The school remains vigilant in the precautions we take to prevent the introduction and spread of viruses, germs and continues to sanitize frequently touched surfaces daily."

The District also encourages everyone to stay home if they're sick and follow the CDC guidelines for proper cleaning.

As always, we appreciate the cooperation of our community and staff.  If you have any questions regarding this or any other situations related to COVID-19, please contact your child’s school nurse," Trethaway said.
