The Asbury Park Press reports the lack of manpower forced the Township to hire private contractors to plow the snow, which could cost upwards of $100,000.

Frustrated residents and business owners are calling for Lakewood's Public Works Director Alvin Burdge to be fired in an online petition on change.org, according to the Asbury Park Press.

Township officials have been interviewing public works employees to find out what happened.

Lakewood Township Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein told the Asbury Park Press that there were fewer absences Monday, which was still more than usual. He also noted that members of Teamsters Local 97 have recently been involved in contract talks with the Township, but said he didn't know if it was a work action.
