- Atlantic City man pleads guilty to gun and assault charges, faces 5 years in state prison
An Atlantic City man is facing several years behind bars in connection with gun and assault cases.
Earlier this week, 49-year-old Shawn Braxton pleaded guilty in two pending indictments on charges of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon/handgun without a permit and third-degree aggravated assault.
Assault Case
According to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, on December 7th, 2024, the Atlantic City Police Department responded to reports of an assault. An investigation revealed that Braxton "spat on, punched, and attempted to pepper spray another individual." He was located and arrested.
The State moved for detention in that case, but Braxton was released on pretrial monitoring.
Gun Case
Then, on June 29th of last year, Atlantic City police conducted a vehicle stop during which they learned that Braxton, who was a passenger in that vehicle, possessed a handgun, which he was not allowed to carry. Following that arrest, he was detained.
Sentencing in April
In exchange for the guilty plea, Braxton is to be sentenced to five years in state prison with a 3 1/2 year period of parole ineligibility. Sentencing is scheduled for April 20th.
Assistant Prosecutor Erin Rush represented the State in these cases.
