I dug through the latest figures to bring you the 25 most dangerous towns in the state, and honestly, a few of these might surprise you. Shore towns, quiet suburbs, even a college town or two made the cut, right alongside the usual suspects you'd expect to see.

How We Ranked These Towns

The rankings come from the FBI's 2024 Uniform Crime Reporting Program, compiled by the team at HomeSnacks. They looked at every NJ town with more than 5,000 residents, over 300 of them, and ranked each one on two things: violent crime per capita and property crime per capita. Those two rankings were averaged to form what they call a "Dangerous Index," and the town with the worst combined score ranked number one.

Why Per Capita Numbers Matter

It's worth pointing out that these are rates per 100,000 people, not raw totals. That's why you'll see small towns show up higher than big cities like Newark or Jersey City.
