Have you ever thought about combining Afghan and French food? It might sound like an unusual combination, but it actually makes a lot of sense.

Afghan cooking is known for big flavors, rice dishes, tender meats, fresh herbs, and plenty of spices. French cooking, on the other hand, features ingredients like butter, cream, sauces, and classic techniques.

Put the two together and you get something pretty interesting.

Afghan-French fusion cooking takes traditional Afghan ingredients and flavors and mixes them with French-style preparation. You might see tender lamb or chicken prepared with French techniques, but seasoned with Afghan spices. Rice, vegetables, dried fruits, and herbs can also become part of dishes that have a French twist.

And that’s what makes fusion cooking so much fun. You can take foods and traditions from two completely different places and come up with something new.

What Is Setaara, In Atlantic City, Like?

My wife and I went to Seraata, and we didn't know what to expect. We knew it had a unique look, but we were not sure about the food. The good news is that both the food and the atmosphere were excellent, and we enjoyed this restaurant a lot.

Inside Seraata is like being in another country and has a dining room like none I've been in before. It was bright, colorful, historic, and relaxing all in one establishment.

We enjoyed menu items like French onion soup, lemon chicken soup, boloani, escargot, beef bourguignon, and Afghan milk pudding with cardamom & rose water.

According to their website, "Founded by Abdullah Panah — a Stockton University graduate and physician who grew up in Atlantic City — Setaara was born of a single conviction: this beautiful city deserved a dining experience as worldly as its visitors.

In 2017, his aunt Homa Bazyar sold her beloved French restaurant, Café Monet in Denver, and brought decades of training under a French chef to the Jersey Shore. Together they imagined an Afghan-French restaurant themed around the golden age of Afghanistan, 1920s–1970s."

Thank you to our server Pattie, who made for a fantastic night and great service.
