Go-Kart rider fractures skull during Toms River Halloween Parade
An elderly Pennsylvania man riding a custom made mini-gas powered cart in the Toms River Halloween Parade suffered a fractured skull last night and was sent to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment and care.
While performing various maneuvers in the roadway, Toms River Police spokeswoman Jill Messina tells WOBM News this morning that Harold Oswald, 80, of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania lost control of the cart, causing it to tip over and his head then struck the pavement.
Oswald was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center with a skull fracture and is listed as critical but stable condition.
Police say that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, nor was the cart equipped with safety belts.
Due to the popularity of this annual event, police believe that some parade-goers may have possession of a video of the incident which would aid in determining the cause of the crash.
If any residents have video of the accident, please forward to Ptl. Gambardella at pgambardella@trpolice.org.
