A fuel spill described as "major" in scope in Sandy Hook has sparked response from the Coast Guard and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection this afternoon.

It's situated at the top of the hook, and drifting southward in the direction of piers at Naval Weapons Station Earle, according to observers relaying information to the New Jersey Emergency Operations network.

What isn't yet clear is the type of fuel, the magnitude and density of the spill, and any potential threat to human health or wildlife.
