You would have to be in a coma to not know that the world of legal sports betting has exploded in recent years and there is no sign that it’s going to slow down anytime soon.  The ability to wager on dozens of games and events each day has made it very easy…now instead of calling your local bookie you can do it all on your phone.  Just about all of my friends have at least one account while some have several of the 15 or so who do business in New Jersey.  By the way those accounts also allow you to play various casino games on your phone as well.

While most of us, including yours truly, are able to enjoy watching a game with a $5 or $10 bet on the outcome there are many for whom the ease of gambling today has created problems.  Some cross the line into uncontrollable, excessive and compulsive gamblers which too often lead to dire consequences for the gambler and his/her entire family.

With that in mind March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month and the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey will be offering a pair of free seminars at local branches of the Ocean County Library that are open to the general public.  Council prevention specialist Vin Bickler will present a timely and candid discussion and will host a question and answer session on the progressive nature of gambling addiction.  He will discuss the warning signs of problem gambling, the impact of online gambling, dangerous youthful involvement and how lonely seniors can get trapped as well.

This free program will be offered by the Ocean County Library at their Toms River branch on Washington Street on Wednesday, March 16 (6:30-8pm) and the Brick branch on Chambers Bridge Road on Tuesday, March 22 (6:30-8pm).
