Seaman Recruit Aaron Redd, 21, lingered until Wednesday at Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House, after collapsing during an initial physical assessment, USCG officials said.

Redd signed up on June 28 and was assigned to Recruit Company Delta-193.

Redd had just completed a one-and-a-half-mile run, and was treated on site by USCG medical staffers until transfer to hospitalization. The Guard said that Redd received medical attention until he died.

Fitness assessments determine a recruit's stamina and ability to withstand the rigors of basic training. Initial results form the framework for fitness-level benchmarks.

According to USCG, recruits there and in all branches of the armed forces undergo medical tests at Military Entrance Processing Stations before enlistment.

Redd was given additional medical evaluations upon arrival in Cape May in accordance with regulations, USCG officials said.
