Two Kayakers are safe after making a distress call to police when gusty winds Tuesday night prevented them from being able to paddle back to shore off Ortley Beach, just south of the Joey Harrison's Surf Club property.

Toms River police say the strong winds turned the kayaks sideways and created "shipping lanes" that made it difficult to navigate back to shore. They used their cell phones to call 9-1-1 shortly before 7:30 p.m.

Fire Units from the Ocean Beach section of Toms River, Lavalette, and Seaside Heights used water vessels to rescue the 44-year-old man from Ortley and a 41-year-old woman from Seaside Park. They were uninjured.

The United States Coast Guard also responded with its 47 foot vessel, but the kayakers had already been rescued.
