Joshua J. Kenny, 37, was extricated from the 2006 Chrysler 300 by police members of the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department after they squelched the flames, according to Police Lieutenant Vincent Manco.

First-responders rushed to County Route 530 in Whiting, outside America's Keswick, at about 9:30 PM.

Investigators said that Kenny's car, westbound on the highway, veered off the pavement, hitting a street sign and pole, turned over and slid to a stop on the westbound shoulder, where flames began shooting out of the vehicle.

Kenny is believed to have worn no seat restraint at the time of the crash. He was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

Police did not speculate regarding speed, road conditions, lighting, traffic volume, driving impairments or health issues that might have contributed to the crash.

Route 530 was closed in the vicinity while Jersey Central Power and Light teams replaced the pole.

Assisting were Whiting Fire Police, MONOC paramedics, and Quality Medical Transport.

Investigation of the circumstances is being led by Manchester PD Sergeant Antonio Ellis and Patrolman Brian Collins.
