Vitale grew up in Beachwood and was a graduate of Toms River High School South. She had been living in Florida, where she passed away Friday, according to the  volunteer group's Facebook page, posted by her close friend, Erin Wolleon.

It is with the deepest sadness and regret that i post this: Bucket Brigade founder, its heart and soul, Cassandra Vitale, passed away 7/31/15. I can not begin to express my personal devastation, or the grief we all must feel, over a loss so overwhelming. I’m sure there are many of you who wish to share your thanks, memories, and condolences. I ask only that you do so with the utmost respect, sensitivity, and dignity deserved by this incredible woman and her family. -Erin

Vitale was living in Florida when Sandy Struck in October 2012, but returned to New Jersey to help collect supplies for National Guard Troops stationed in Bay Head and buckets stocked with supplies for recovering residents. She also was instrumental in helping storm victims in Ortley Beach.

Details of Vitale's death were not immediately known.
