The holiday shopping season is about to begin. The term “Black Friday” first appeared in the 1950s and 1960s in Philadelphia, where police officers used it to describe the chaos that erupted the day after Thanksgiving.

Crowds of shoppers and tourists would flood the city before the annual Army–Navy football game, causing traffic jams, packed stores, and a surge in shoplifting. Local retailers didn’t love the negative tone, but the phrase stuck.

 

 

With online shopping and events like Cyber Monday, it’s evolved into a global, month-long shopping phenomenon that marks the start of the holiday season.

 

 

 

 

Costco Black Friday 2025 Ad Leaks Early

According to an article from NJ.com, "Costco will hold a month-long Black Friday Sale and you’re not going to have to wait long to start scoring deals. This sale means big discounts on electronics, kitchen gadgets, home goods, toys, apparel, winter accessories, auto care products and everything you need for your Christmas celebration."

 

When is the Costco "Black Friday" Sale?

The sales under the "Black Friday" umbrella begin on Halloween and will extend through Cyber Monday. They will break their "Black Friday" sales into segments.

  • October 31st - November 16th
  • November 17th - November 26th
  • November 27th (Thanksgiving Day) and November 28th - December 1st

According to NJ.com, "Costco will be closed on Nov. 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday but will still have deals online to shop."
