We might technically still be in winter here in New Jersey, but if you’re anything like me, you’re already daydreaming about sunshine, flip flops, and long days outside.

We’ve had some seriously weird spring weather lately in the Garden State, one day it feels like April, the next day we’re back in winter coats. But once spring and summer finally settle in? There is truly no place like New Jersey.

Sure, we instantly think about our gorgeous beaches and iconic boardwalks. And yes, I’ll be there with my toes in the sand the second it’s warm enough. But let’s not forget about another hidden gem that makes this state so beautiful, our lakes.

What makes New Jersey lakes so special?

New Jersey’s lakes are absolutely stunning, and when the weather warms up, they become the perfect escape for families, couples, and anyone just looking to soak up the outdoors.

Kayaking and paddleboarding have become so popular over the years, and our lakes are ideal for both. And here’s a fun fact, fishing is actually the number one outdoor activity in New Jersey. Spending a day casting a line with the family? That’s a Jersey summer classic.

Here are five of the most beautiful lakes in New Jersey that make me even more excited for warmer days ahead:

Hooks Creek Lake – Matawan, NJ

Tucked inside Cheesequake State Park, Hooks Creek Lake is small, quaint, and perfect for a relaxing day outdoors. This park really has a little bit of everything — camping, swimming, kayak tours, mountain biking, and playgrounds for the kids.

There are restrooms and changing areas by the lake, which makes it super family-friendly. It’s one of those peaceful spots that feels like a mini getaway without having to leave the state.

Lake Hopatcong – Landing, NJ

If you’ve never been to Lake Hopatcong, put it on your summer list immediately.

It’s New Jersey’s largest freshwater lake, and it is absolutely gorgeous. There’s so much happening here in the warmer months — fishing, boating, water sports, kayaking, and yes, swimming (with lifeguards on duty during the summer).

There’s something about being out on that water that just feels like summer. I love it there — it’s truly a Jersey treasure.

Lake Carnegie – Princeton, NJ

Lake Carnegie has such a serene, peaceful vibe. It’s privately owned and used by Princeton University for their rowing team, which makes it feel a little exclusive.

But you can still fish and picnic along this beautiful lake. It’s the perfect spot for a quiet afternoon with a book or a relaxing stroll along the water.

Farrington Lake – Milltown, NJ

Farrington Lake is a freshwater reservoir that’s a great warm-weather destination. In the summer months, it’s popular for fishing and swimming.

It’s simple, scenic, and another reminder that you don’t have to head to the shore to enjoy beautiful water views in New Jersey.

Lake Lenape – Andover, NJ

Lake Lenape is perfect for a laid-back day outdoors. It’s a great spot for picnicking, kayaking, and fishing — basically all the things that scream “hello summer.”

Pack a cooler, bring your paddleboard, and you’ve got yourself a perfect Jersey afternoon.

Even though we’re still bundling up right now, I can’t help but look ahead. Spring and summer in New Jersey just hit differently. The lakes, the fresh air, the longer days — it all comes together to make the Garden State even more beautiful.
