Toms River Sets Summer Curfew for Barrier Island Teens to Keep Nights Safe
Summer at the Jersey Shore is supposed to feel relaxing, peaceful, and family friendly, especially along the beautiful barrier island sections of Toms River.

With another busy season arriving, township officials have decided to once again put a temporary curfew in place for minors in Ortley Beach to the North Beach section through Labor Day 2026, according to patch.com.
The curfew officially began over Memorial Day Weekend and will remain active until September 7th, 2026 (Labor Day Weekend).
Under the rule, anyone under the age of 18 cannot be out between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless they are with a parent or guardian or traveling for approved reasons like work, emergencies, religious activities, school-related events, or returning from a private gathering, thanks to the Patch.
Keeping Summer Nights Peaceful
Many residents support the curfew because they believe it helps maintain the calm atmosphere families expect while visiting the island. During the summer, the barrier island becomes packed with vacationers, seasonal renters, and visitors enjoying the beaches, restaurants, and nightlife.
For many locals, the curfew is less about punishment and more about prevention. The hope is that limiting late-night wandering among teens will reduce disturbances, vandalism, unsafe behavior, and other problems that can sometimes pop up during crowded summer weekends.
Parents Understand the Concern
A lot of parents likely understand the thinking behind the curfew. Many grew up hearing the same advice: nothing good happens late at night when teenagers are roaming around unsupervised.
I’ve always told my daughter that once it gets really late, it’s simply smarter and safer to head home. Even now, I still believe kids do not need to be wandering the streets late at night without adults nearby. Some people may disagree, but many parents feel the same way.
Protecting What Makes the Island Special
The island next to Seaside is a section that remains one of the most beautiful spots along the Jersey Shore. Families return year after year because they love the peaceful neighborhoods, the beaches, and the sense of community.
Residents want visitors to enjoy themselves while also respecting the area and the people who live there year-round. Supporters of the curfew believe the seasonal rule is one more step toward keeping the island safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone this summer.
Summer Rules Meant for Safety
Officials say the curfew is temporary and focused on public safety during the busiest months of the year. While there are exceptions built into the rule, the overall message is simple: enjoy the shore, have fun, but stay safe and make smart decisions after dark.
