If you’ve ever stood on the docks in Barnegat and just looked out over the bay, you’re basically standing on a piece of old Jersey history.

This whole area started as a working waterfront. First it was the Lenape fishing and clamming here, then settlers came in and built their lives around the water too. By the 1700s and 1800s, the docks were busy… boats coming and going, cargo moving, locals making a living right off Barnegat Bay.

Fast forward to today, and it’s a totally different vibe. The big working port days are long gone, and now it’s more about fishing, crabbing, and just enjoying the water.

I used to go to the docks growing up in Ocean County. I remember one summer that was full of entertainment at the docks. It was the summer of 1976, and it was the bicentennial celebration, and there was lots going on at the Barnegat docks, and this summer, with the nation's 250th birthday, I am sure it will be a fun one again.
