As a long suffering fan of the New York Mets what has transpired over the last couple of weeks can only be described as a roller coaster in which your emotions go from agony to ecstasy, sometimes in a matter of minutes, maybe even seconds. One moment it looks bleak and the next you’re jumping up and down in the middle of your living room filled with indescribable joy.  For those of you who don’t follow baseball let me catch you up.

The Mets were born in 1962 and as a six-year old I can’t say I was a fan from birth but I caught the spirit at a very young age.  For most of my life the Mets have given me more disappointment that anything else outside of 1969 and 1986 when they won the World Series.

This season did not start well and as spring turned to summer it looked like it would be another of those “wait until next year” campaigns.  The temperature was not the only thing that heated up in July and August and as Labor Day came the chances of the Mets making the post-season improved.  However in typical fashion there was more heartbreak and it actually took until the day after the regular season was supposed to end for the Amazin’s to secure a spot in the playoffs courtesy of a Francisco Lindor late-inning home run against the Braves who usually break our hearts.  Not this time.

Then came more drama and a series win over the Milwaukee Brewers which set up a meeting with the Phillies.  Since we are trying to remove “hate” from our language I’ll just say they are a team and fan base I despise.  With the help of another Lindor home run they are now in our rear view mirror and it’s on to the National League Championship Series against either the Dodgers or Padres.

This Mets team and what they have done the last few weeks is why sports is often great and why so many of us love our teams…even if you have to wait 38 years for another championship.  Let’s Go Mets!
