There is no world-wide event easier to find fault with then the Olympic Games, especially the summer version which of course is held once every four years (unless there is a pandemic).  The International Olympic Committee is filled with a bunch of greedy hypocrites who are mostly male and really could care less about the athletes.

Of course we criticize everything from the host country to the sports themselves and if you’re old enough you remember when the games were supposed to be only for amateur athletes.  Of course that went out the window years ago so you now have the likes of millionaires like LeBron James wearing the same USA uniform as athletes who had to work multiple jobs just to get to Paris.

The Olympics are about as far from perfect as you can get but in truth they have always been that way.  The real beauty comes when you can look past the faults and embrace stories like the American men’s gymnastics team who captured a surprising bronze medal.  The joy of them celebrating the first medal for the U.S. in 16 years was as pure as it gets.  Same for the American women’s rugby team who scored on a miracle play in the final seconds to claim their first-ever medal in the sport.  They went from relative obscurity to media darlings overnight and captured the true spirit of what the games are all about.

Listen I could do without Snoop Dog and the time difference deprives us of live action during prime-time but I’m an unabashed fan of the Olympic games and love that it tends to bring out patriotism at a time when we need it the most.  It’s the one time that we’re on the same team…it’s all about the red, white and blue.

Look for these NJ athletes at the Paris Olympics

There will be lots of NJ ties in Paris for the Olympic games this summer, running July 26 through Aug. 11 — with events airing on NBC and online at NBC.com.
