Halloween is sort of the beginning of the holiday season as over the next two months we will have Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas/Hanukkah and New Year’s Day.  In addition there are a few others that count more as observances than holidays but to some they are very special.

While I know many rate Halloween as their favorite holiday for obvious reasons…costumes, candy and more it is #10 on a very recent list compiled by Statista of our most popular national and religious events.  According to the survey Thanksgiving had a popularity rating of 79% to top the list but what is second may shock you.  Actually there was a tie at 78% between Christmas and Memorial Day. Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday but in just about every survey and poll you will usually find Christmas on top before Turkey Day.

It is the choice of Memorial Day that is confounding as the day itself is one we mourn more than celebrate.  However I have to assume most people who selected this did so because we treat it as the unofficial start to summer and all the fun that comes with it.

In perusing through the rest of the top ten in this survey you will find more strange statistics as Veterans Day is fourth followed by Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Labor Day and Halloween.

Some things are not easily explained.
