Our annual celebration of the American worker is at hand. On Saturday, as Labor Day weekend builds to a full head of steam, a globally-based group visits Asbury Park's boardwalk to ask you, "What does it mean to have a good job?"

Purpose, with headquarters in New York, London and Rio de Janeiro, includes the Jersey Shore tourist spot in its national Workshift tour. Organizers believe that the path to solutions must begin with input from workers themselves.

The Purposeweb page describes three organizational objectives: to create change through mass response; to support progressive organizations, nonprofits and philanthropies; and to develop technology with the aim of empowering individuals the world over.

An art installation will occupy the Boardwalk between Asbury and Sunset Avenues. Visitors will be invited to choose their most-highly-valued aspects of fulfilling employment, such as stability, opportunity, flexibility and pride.

Those who do will be interviewed about their work experiences and encouraged to add a piece that represents their idas to the installation.

Organizers say that they hope to raise awareness of job quality in America, give New Jersey workers a forum to express their views of workplace standards, and develop standards to which all workplaces can aspire.

Purpose's Workshift campaign is supported by the Rockefeller Foundation.
