Publicity Organizer Michelle Cleary says the event also honors Manalapan resident Chris Gray and Tom McCann, a New York Firefighter who's brother resides in the Monmouth County Community. She says it also honors all the lives that were lost during the terrorist attacks of 9-11. Manalapan lost a total of eleven residents that day.

This is the 11th anniversary of Walk with Joe which is a 5-k walk held at the Monmouth Battlefield State Park. Money collected from the walker's $20 fee goes toward funding local charities like the Samaritan Center in Manalapan, the Child Advocacy Center in Freehold and the Christopher Gray Memorial Scholarship Fund. According to the Walk With Joe web site, more that $175,000 has been donated to a long list of beneficiaries since 2002.

There seems to be no let up in momentum either, according to Clearly, the number of participants continues to grow every year. "We've been able to maintain our steady stream of walkers every year and get some new walkers and it's a beautiful ceremony and a beautiful day."

Walk with Joe takes place Saturday, September 7th at 10 a.m. and the newly renovated and upgraded Monmouth Battlefield State Park in Manalapan. Cleary says participants can register at the Walk With Joe web site or they can register in person at the park the day of the event.
