A classic fixture of a firehouse is the well known fireman's pole. But today, many firehouses are going for a safer option.

Who among us didn't fantasize when we were kids of sliding down a brass firehouse pole to rush to a waiting fire truck? The only problem is, a firefighter with a sprained ankle from a hard landing isn't going to be much help when every second matters. After many years on the force, some firefighters suffer from chronic problems such as back and neck pain from so many quick landings.

So what are some fire departments opting for instead?

It makes sense if you think about it - a playground slide can be just as quick and is definitely safer than depending on a pad or your feet to brake a slide down a pole.
