Sea Bright Police Chief John Sorrentino told NJ.com that Kevin C. Searfoss of Rockaway was prounced dead at 11 p.m at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch.

Searfoss was with a group of people on the beach and swimming with another person, when beach goers heard yelling and screaming and alerted lifeguards from the nearby Driftwood Cabana Club around 1 p.m.

Sea Bright lifeguards and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded. It took rescuers 20 minutes to reach Searfoss because he was submerged under water.

Lifeguards were able to rescue the other swimmer fairly quickly, according to Sorrentino, and that person did not need medical attention.

Lifeguards performed CPR and were able to get a pulse on Searfoss. He was listed in critical condition after being rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
