More than 18,000 trees, mostly deemed in "poor" or "very poor" condition by park officials, will be knocked down to build the 90-acre solar facility near the Safari park. It will be able to generate nearly 22-megawatts, enough energy to power 3,100 homes.

KDC Solar LLC in Bedminster will build, operate and own the solar farm to provide about 98 percent of the park's energy. The Jackson Township Planning Board approved the project March 2.

Park President John Fitzgerald said in a statement that solar power will significantly reduce the park's reliance on fossil fuels.

Six Flags spokeswoman Kristin Siebeneicher told the Asbury Park Press the park and KDC Solar have pledged to replant 25,000 trees over a period of seven years.

The solar plant is expected to be up and running sometime in 2016.
