Shrewsbury Centenarian Shows Off Her Style
One hundred is a lucky number for Carlotta Niles of Shrewsbury. A hundred of her closest friends joined her as she marked her 100th birthday in West Long Branch on Memorial Day.
Carlotta and her friends spent the afternoon reveling at the Jersey Bridge Club.
Her lineage is as impressive as her lifespan. Carlott's mother was silent screen star June Elvidge, who appeared in more than 70 silent films including Law of the Yukon, The Price of Pride and The Law of Woman.
Her uncle as Admiral DeWitt Clinton Ramsey, USN, who commanded the aircraft carrier Saratoga up to and during the landings at Guadalcanal in World War II. Among his decorations are the Navy Cross for his tactical use of aircraft in engagements in the Solomon Islands.
After a stirring celebration, Carlotta pulled up a chair and played three hours' worth of tournament duplicate bridge.
