According to information from the office of Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi, Officer Basil Warren had just gone off duty but was still uniformed when he encountered Tysean Fitzpatrick, 26, a little after 3 AM in Edgewater Park.

Warren drove his personal vehicle to a newly-bought home on Stevenson Avenue, entered the dwelling and returned to the vehicle to find Fitzpatrick behind the wheel, authorities said.

Investigators believe that Warren ordered him out, but are unclear as to what ensued before the officer fired. Fitzpatrick progressed a short distance down the street before the car ground to a halt, authorities said.

Police, alerted by a resident on the same street, found Warren administering first aid to Fitzpatrick, who was rushed to Cooper University Medical Center in Camden.

No charges have been filed against Fitzpatrick while the investigation continues, according to Bernardi's office.
