A South Brunswick police officer was hospitalized Monday after his patrol car was rear-ended by another vehicle as he sat inside writing a traffic summons, police said.

The crash took place at about 1:45 p.m. on the southbound side of Route 130 near Route 522.

Police the officer was on a traffic stop when his vehicle was hit from behind by a white car.

Officer Gregory Boldizar had pulled over a tractor trailer for speeding. Boldizar was back in his car filling out paperwork when he was struck by a 2014 white Mazda driven by Jordan Pinnock, 24, of South Brunswick, police said.

Witnesses said that Pinnock had been driving Route 130 south in the left lane when he drifted into the right lane, then onto the shoulder, then partially onto the grass before striking the patrol car, police said.

Pinnock was disoriented and said he did not remember what had happened, police said.

No charges have been filed against Pinnock as the investigaiton continues. Township police say investigators are looking into the possibility that the driver was suffering a medical condition that led to the crash.

Chief Raymond Hayducka said Tuesday that the state's Move Over Law is an important tool in protecting officers on the highways.

“While we don’t know exactly why this driver lost control, there is a law in New Jersey that motorist need to move over for stopped emergency vehicles," he said. "Standing only feet away from vehicles passing at 55mph leave little room for error, as we see in this case.”

Following the crash, both the driver and the police officer were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in South Brunswick for injuries. Both were treated and are expected to be released.
