NJ High Court To Review Special Election Date
New Jersey’s highest court will review Gov. Chris Christie’s decision to hold a special election for U.S. Senate 20 days before his own gubernatorial election.
A lawyer for the group of Democrats who sued tells The Associated Press the state Supreme Court has agreed to take the case.
Peg Schaffer has till Monday morning to file briefs. The governor’s office will have until Tuesday to reply.
The court took the unusual step of waiving the application process and agreed to consider the case immediately.
There will be no oral arguments.
An appeals court ruled Thursday that the governor was within his authority to schedule the special election to replace Sen. Frank Lautenberg on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Lautenberg died on June 3. The election is for the remainder of Lautenberg’s term.
