The Narcan solution for potentially-fatal heroin overdoses spreads to Monmouth County, and Ocean Township Police quickly climb on board.

The substance, also called Naloxone, counteracts the effects of the opiate and is administered in emergency situations. Success in the pilot program in Ocean County has already led to widespread availability in police departments and training sessions for families.

Trained officers on the Ocean Township force began carrying the antidote this week. The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office paid the tab for each of the $31 kits now on hand.
