Monmouth University President to Retire in 2013

Monmouth University President Paul Gaffney II will soon be stepping down.

The school’s Board of Trustees announced Monday that Gaffney will retire in June 2013. They will soon begin a nationwide search for his successor.

The 65-year-old Gaffney became the West Long Branch school’s seventh president in July 2003.

A U.S. Naval Academy graduate, he served in the Navy before retiring as a vice admiral. He then became president of the National Defense University in Washington, serving there until he took the Monmouth post.

Gaffney has overseen construction of several projects on the Monmouth campus, including a new $57 million multipurpose activity center. He also played a role in building a residence hall and an arts building, along with renovations to the library and various theaters.
