Light Up New Jersey Commemorates Sandy’s 1 Year Anniversary

New Jersey commemorates the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy with Light Up New Jersey up-and-down the shore on Tuesday night.

From Raritan to Brigantine and Atlantic City to Asbury Park it’s a festive mood as listeners to the Townsquare Media New Jersey stations will gather in anticipation of shining flashlights at 6:30 p.m. in a Moment of Light to show the world that while our recovery continues we are indeed stronger than the storm.

THE LATEST:

6:27 p.m. - Big Joe Henry calls it “surreal” to be in Asbury Park a year after the storm and says the “spirit lives on” as recovery continues.

6:18 p.m. – NJ 101.5′s Dan Specht says many people in Keansburg are walking up to each other and hugging each other as they arrive for the event.

6:12 p.m. - NJ 101.5′s  Ray Handel says there is a lot of hope in the crowd of several hundred at Sayreville.

5:50 p.m. - Townsquare’s Tom Dunphy estimates around 1,000 people on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach/ “What we’ve got to work on is our housing,” said Point Pleasant Beach Mayor Vinny Barrella. “That’s still lagging far behind and it’s not acceptable.”

5:45 p.m.- Townsquare Media’s Ilya Hemlin reports a couple hundred people already gathered in Seaside Heights. One person whose house was destroyed by Sandy made it a point to come out “because he was part of it” a year ago when Sandy made landfall in Brigantine around 7:00 p.m. on October 29, 2012.

5:40 p.m. - WOBM’s Justin Louis describes a “Big crowd with a great atmosphere” at Mike’s ABG in South Seaside Park.

Stations have set up on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach, in front of Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, on the Music Pier in Ocean City and at Lucy the Elephant in Margate.
