Police officers have come and gone in Brick but a constant has been the Helping Hands Benefit Basketball Game and Friday night the tradition continues when Brick Township PBA Local 230 holds their 22nd annual fundraiser.

Once again the game in the East Gym of Brick Township High School will pit members of the police department against the Green Dragons football team and as in the past proceeds will help a local family dealing with financial hardship due to a child’s serious illness.

In this case though it’s not one child but three in the same family as the cops and jocks will be playing Friday for the Schuller Family. 6-year old Hudson has been diagnosed with a Neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow in the brain, nervous system and spinal cord. That in itself is more than any family should have to handle but Hudson’s sisters, 13-year old Alexis and 4-year old Georgia both have Cystic Fibrosis. As a result of this the family has been experiencing issues with their health insurance and the medical bills keep pouring in.

So with that in mind the Brick PBA is doing their part and calling on the community to join them and pull together for this family in need. Tickets to Friday’s 7:30pm game will be sold at the door and are just $3 for adults and $2 for students and of course you can donate more at the game or by contacting the Brick Police Department at (732) 262-1100. For more than two decades Brick PBA Local 230 has answered the call and shown their generosity by raising thousands of dollars for local families…at the same time credit should go to the high school and Green Dragons football program for assisting with this effort. The Schuller Family is just the latest to find out that the expression “there’s never a cop around when you need one”…is pure hogwash!

On another basketball note. Central Regional High School will host tonight’s Shore Coaches Association Senior All-Star games with many of the shore’s best players representing their high schools for the final time. The Girl’s game is at 6pm with the Boys game to follow and I’ll be handling the PA duties…should be a fun night with plenty of talent on display.
