Gov. Chris Christie says he is exploring letting the federal government set up the state health insurance exchange required by the federal health care overhaul.

He also said he is not sure that New Jersey needs to expand Medicaid under the federal law because the state’s program is already so inclusive.

Speaking on the Fox News Channel’s “Fox and Friends” Tuesday, he said that it might be more cost-effective to have the state’s exchange.

As for Medicaid, a Supreme Court ruling last week blunted the federal government’s ability to force states to expand Medicaid to include people making up to 133 percent of the poverty level.

New Jersey has much higher threshold than that for subsidized insurance for people with children. But the limits for people without kids are lower.

Christie talked about the federal health care Supreme Court  on CNBC’s Squawk Box calling it a “wrong decision” and accused Chief Justice John Roberts of “making stuff up from the bench” in order to justify the law by calling it a tax. He also thinks Obama got an uptick in the polls because of health care but overall believes it is a “margin of error race” which puts Mitt Romney in a good position for the fall campaign.
